When You Get Called Out
Talk publicly about sustainability long enough, and someone will call you out. It’s not a risk to avoid. It’s a certainty to prepare for.
When Patagonia faced public scrutiny over labor conditions deep in its supply chain, they didn’t delete the criticism or issue a defensive statement. They published an open assessment of the issue and detailed exactly what they were doing to fix it. What could have been a crisis became a case study in accountability.
The wrong response: delete comments, get defensive, hide the bottleneck.
The right response: reply within 24 hours, acknowledge the valid points, and lay out a concrete fix.
Your protocol for the next time it happens: Respond within 24 hours. Silence reads as hiding. Acknowledge the gap directly. No excuses. Share the plan and a timeline for the fix. Keep a public FAQ addressing the questions you get most often.
Accountability under scrutiny is what turns friction into long-term trust. Defensiveness is what turns it into a permanent story.
How would your company currently respond if a customer called out a gap in your sustainability claims publicly?
