Numbers Over Noise
The most trusted brands aren’t making the loudest statements. They’re publishing the most specific numbers.
“We are deeply committed to reducing our environmental footprint” convinces no one. “We reduced single-use plastic packaging by 35% since January across all shipments” does the work for you.
Three habits to adopt:
- Lead with the number and the timeline. “We cut water usage in production by 22% over the last 12 months” is more convincing than any company statement.
- Show the work in progress. “We are currently improving…” or “Our target is…” builds more trust than claiming you’ve already arrived.
- Let the frontline talk. Engineers and operations staff explaining their own work consistently outperform executive statements.
Trust builds in this order: executive PR statements convince the fewest people. General values claims do a little better. Specific metrics and timelines do better still. Frontline employee stories build the most trust of all.
Specific data beats broad language every time it’s tested.
What’s one specific number your company could lead with instead of a values statement?
